• Hello everybody!

CM2 have worked really hard, the jewel of their masterpieces focused on poetry! We looked at different styles of poems (Haiku, free-style, shape poems, rhyming couplets) which they wrote on their own and then performed in front of the other classes of CM1/CM2. They were fantastic!

Before that, we started by looking at prepositions / directions and linking them to questions. Asking questions to find your way around.

After that children had to describe themselves in detail. Looking at their appearance, what they enjoy, family life and pets as well as looking at their environment (the city / area they live in). This involved work in the computer room which made them very happy!

We look forward to next term when we will be focusing on a big project, the summer solstice! CM2 will play a very important part in this.

  • As part of a cross-class group project, the students in CM2 all came together and then split into groups to produce a role play displaying a variety of emotions. Using Disney's animation film 'Inside Out' for a foundation, in groups of 5-6 students had to produce a dialogue and act out a scenario using a variety of emotions.

A main focus of the project was to help students understand the important of pronunciation and tone and body language when speaking. Additionally, it was a basis for improving students' teamwork skills and build vocabulary and confidence.

It was great seeing the enthusiasm and teamwork displayed by all the students in what was a difficult tasks. The students worked really well leading up to the performance (see below) and once I work out how to upload the videos you'll get to see some of the impressive results.

  • CM2 learned about and rehearsed the Wham! song Last Christmas, finding out about the song, what it was about and practising telling the story in their own words.

Throughout January we have been looking at descriptions, using adjectives and adverbs to help us describe different people and objects as we create a short book about ourselves.

  • Throughout November the class has been working on a piece of text lifted from the story 'Swiss Family Robinson'.

Reading comprehension through context was main feature of this text The class was challenged to think about new vocabulary to gain meaning from where the word was in the sentence and in the context of the story.

Also, from this text we moved on to a 'Deserted Island' challenge where students worked in groups and from a list of items, including such things as matches, tent, radio, etc., they had to discuss the usefulness or not of the items and then present to the class. We were looking at improving fluency when speaking, and looking at asking questions. A grammar focus through this task was looking at comparatives and superlatives (ie. good, better, the best), as well as visiting making positive and negative statements in the present and past tense, and asking quesions.

For the reminder of the term we will be reviewing some of the work we covered and looking at things related to Christmas and the winter holidays.

  • CM2 have been working very hard on creating their own town!

The town is a map that each person has worked on in a group and one that is connected to the other maps.

The map comes with written work about the buildings which are placed on the map. There are also directions that the children have to express so that you can move from one place to another place.

We have since been looking at open-ended questions - Who, What, When, Where, Why, How. The children have been answering these questions in relation to an object they have been studying.

As we approach the holidays we are going to look at some grammar so that the children can express themselves further using English language.
